While we try to keep things as simple as possible Powder at The Coating Company. As with any process that includes colour choices, finishing options and such a variety of uses there will inevitably be a lot of questions. Whilst you are more than welcome to give me a call anytime, I have addressed the most commonly asked questions here. Hopefully they will clear things up and perhaps we will see you at the factory.

  • What can be powder coated ?
Anything that can conduct electricity, because powder coating is effectively an electrostaticly applied finish anything that conducts electricity can be powder coated. This means that any metal products can be powder coated. A good rule of thumb would be any metal that can be electrostatically charged and withstand the temperatures of the curing process (400*F or 205* C) can be powder coated.
  • Can you powder coat galvanised steel?
Yes most definately, although if you haven't galvanised your part yet you might consider our galvanising powder coating option. It is a zinc enriched epoxy powder coating which makes an excellent protective base coat for ferrous metals (steel, iron, etc.). The zinc acts as a sacrificial barrier to galvanic corrosion, protecting the substrate metal.
  • Is Powder Coating enviromently friendly ?
Powder coating is a far friendlier option for the environment when compared to conventional painting. One of the key advantages powder coating has over other finishing processes is how safe it is for the environment and for the people who work with it. Unlike traditional solvent-based wet paint, powder coating is considered a “green” technology that doesn't generate harmful solvents or airborne pollutants. There is no "chemical waste" generated in the process of powder coating. Unlike other finishes, powder coatings don't contain heavy metals such as cadmium and lead.
  • What are the benifits of powder coating?
Durability. As far as the finish is concerned, powder coating is more durable than most other options. When it cures, the powder will form chemical bonds in the process and creating a flexible, durable finish. Powder coated parts are highly resistant to corrosion, flaking, and scratching.
  • How long does powder coating last?
If proper procedure is followed powder coating can keep its finish for up to 20 years. It is noted for its resistance to chemicals, corrosion and weather. It is important that the item to be powder coated is correctly pre-treated to protect the longevity of the finished product.
  • Does powder coating scratch easily?
Powder coating performs better than any paint with greater resistance to chips and wear as well as scratching less easily. However Powder coating is not indestructible and can be scratched or chipped if it is impacted with enough force or is exposed to sharp objects. Thanks to the application process and the final oven curing it has a mechanically harder finish and also provides better colour retention.
  • How long will it take to do my rims?
Because our powders are imported our average lead time is about three weeks. We do hold a small stock of powders so it could be less, but quality is worth waiting for is it not?
